Post student analysis

The video I'm going to analyse is one of last years students, Rachel Brent's Tinie Tempah, Pass Out. I'm doing this video as it is the same genre as our production so it will be familiar territory.

As an initial overview I think this video is a very good finished product which is appropriate to the genre and has excellent editing and camera skills within it.

There are a huge array of camera shots within Rachels video, and this is something which is needed to keep the viewer entertained throughout the production. She has used  mixture of long and mid shots, close ups and extreme close ups at various different angles. All of these are very professional looking and the mis-en-scene within them is excellent.

Editing is key to make a video look like a professional production. It is evident Rachel has spent literally hours in editing to make this video to the standard it is. There are loads of cuts and transitions in time with the tempo of the music and the neon coloured titles are someting which is a popular convention within hip-hop and particularly one music video producer, Hype Williams.

Costume - The costume has been selected carefully so that it not only suits the genre, but suits the individual style of Tinie Tempah. This paricular artist dresses more formally than most other hi[p-hop artists and Rachel has very effectively re-reated this with her chosn actors. The more expensive brands and formal wear are conotations of wealth and power.

Lighting - The lighting used is again very professional and appropriate. It is not different to how you would see a professional video and on that basis it shows excellent choice of lighting on Rachel's part. It is something I could take inspiration from and to try and to use as a bench mark for our production.

Actors - The actors that Rachel has also chosen are very well looked into. The male gender and ethnicity are all connotations of the hip-hop genre. This helps to keep the video a professional looking production. Actors like this are used in the original video and are also used in many other hip-hop music videos such as Labrinth, Earthquake.

Props - Rachel has again chosen pros very carefully, which give the video certain aspects of a fully professional production. The champagne glasses signify wealth which is a connotation of the genre and is a popular convention in hip-hop videos, used in videos such as Snoop Dogg, Drop It Like Its Hot.

Setting - I think the setting is good but in comparison to other elements within the video its average. They don't hinder the video but the locations haven't been as carefully thought through and planned in as much detail as the camera shots, lighting and props for example. Personally  I like the settings that have been done on the green screen. These just appear white in the background and are a very subtle but effective setting.

I don't feel that more of a narrative would have helped or made it worse, this is mainly due to the genre in which a narrative isn't often used in these music videos. The narrative it has is already very good.

If I had a helped with the video, the only thing I would have done differently is use a greater variety of shots. This is because I feel it starts to become slightly boring towards the end, but a greater variety of shots would help to increase the attention span of the viewers. Also the pixilation at the end takes a a bit of the professionalism off the production.

I think that Rachel has put in a great deal of effort and it has paid off to make this very proffesional video which is perfectly suited to the artist and genre. It has a large range of camera shots and keeps the viewer entertained throughout. All elements within the video have been thought out carefully and the rewards are evident.

  1. Talk about the titles...you like? Why?

Get some stills to support the different points you make.

What don't you like? Would more of a narrative have helped? Or a wider range of camera shots/angles/movements?

Settings - which do you like and why? Which don't you like.

If you'd have helped with the video, what would you have done differently?

It'll be an A if you do all that.
